Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Home to over 200 giant pandas, this world-renowned research centre offers an intimate look at China's most beloved animal. Morning visits (before 10am) are best — the pandas are most active and feeding. The base also houses red pandas, black-necked cranes, and a fascinating museum on panda conservation.

💡 TipsBook tickets in advance online. Arrive early for the best panda activity. Wear comfortable shoes — the grounds are large and hilly.

Sanxingdui Museum

三星堆博物馆

One of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. The Sanxingdui civilisation (1700–1100 BC) produced bronze masks, gold sceptres, and jade artefacts unlike anything found elsewhere in the ancient world. The newly expanded museum opened in 2023 and is a world-class experience.

💡 TipsTake a taxi or hire a driver — about 45 minutes from central Chengdu. Allow 3–4 hours for the full museum. Audio guides available in English.

Leshan Giant Buddha

Carved into a cliff face at the confluence of three rivers, the Leshan Giant Buddha stands 71 metres tall — the largest stone Buddha in the world. Construction began in 713 AD and took 90 years. The site also includes the adjacent Mount Emei, making it a natural full-day excursion from Chengdu.

💡 TipsHigh-speed train from Chengdu takes about 40 minutes. Queues for the descent stairs can be long — arrive early. Boat tours offer a spectacular full-body view.

Mount Emei

One of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China, Mount Emei rises to 3,099 metres and is home to over 30 temples, ancient forests, and the famous Golden Summit — a gilded pagoda that emerges above the clouds. The mountain is also known for its resident Tibetan macaques.

💡 TipsCable cars are available to the summit. Bring warm layers even in summer — the summit is cold. Often combined with a Leshan Buddha visit.

Jiuzhaigou Valley

A fairy-tale landscape of turquoise lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks in the Min Mountains. The valley's vivid colours — caused by mineral deposits and algae — shift dramatically with the seasons. Autumn (October) is peak season for foliage; winter offers frozen waterfalls and far fewer crowds.

💡 TipsFly or take a long-distance bus from Chengdu. Book accommodation well in advance during peak season. Electric buses run throughout the valley.

Don't overlook Chengdu itself. Wander the ancient Jinli Street, explore the Wuhou Shrine (dedicated to the Three Kingdoms hero Zhuge Liang), sip tea in Renmin Park, and eat your way through the city's legendary food scene — hotpot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and street snacks at every turn.

💡 TipsThe metro is excellent and easy to navigate. Kuanzhai Alley is great for an evening stroll. Try a traditional Sichuan teahouse for an authentic local experience.

Getting Around

Chengdu has an extensive metro network covering most attractions. High-speed trains connect to Leshan and Emei in under an hour. For Sanxingdui, a taxi or private driver is most convenient.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant weather. Summer is warm but rainy. Jiuzhaigou is spectacular in October for autumn colours.
